On January 20th, 2021, families around the world watched the inauguration with bated breath. Following violent protests at the Capitol, all eyes (young and old) were cast on what was happening in Washington. For the first time ever, an inauguration was happening during a pandemic and amid concerns about riots. Thankfully, the ceremony ran smoothly, and everyone looked on in awe as Amanda Gorman read her poem, “The Hill We Climb.”

With the inauguration’s positive vibes pushing us forward into 2021, we at Xyza hope to encourage young people to keep following the news with the same level of interest. Here are five good reasons why our kids should keep up to speed with world events this year.

1. Space stories abound

Between NASA and other space agencies around the world, 2021 is shaping up to be an exciting year for space stories. There could be an international party with three different countries landing on Mars at the same time, and we could see the second American moon landing this year!

2. Youth in the news

If Amanda Gorman set the tone to the year with her poetry at the inauguration (and at the Super Bowl!), then we are more excited every day at what youth will accomplish in 2021. Here’s a look at how young people around the country came through in 2020!

3. The Pandemic

In 2020 (a year like no other!), kids learnt to adapt to a new world where COVID-19 reigned, and in 2021 science and medicine will provide solutions to this deadly disease. We’re watching history unfold this year as vaccines roll out at record speeds (see our story of vaccines in history for kids here) and countries organize, and combat variants of the virus every month.

4. Second Time’s The Charm?

The Tokyo Olympics were canceled in 2020, disappointing fans of the biggest international sporting event. But will 2021 be the year it actually happens? Athletes from all over the world wait with bated breath. Even as a muted and masked event this time around, this would be a perfect event to track over the summer!

5. Will We Finally Get Drones To Deliver?

Perhaps. We’re tracking fascinating stories in technology for kids this year, including drone delivery from the skies, robot delivery on the roads, and perhaps faster internet, so those Zoom classes are just the way we want them!

So whether you follow the news with your kids via news websites, TV news channels, YouTube, or kids’ newspapers, we think 2021 will give you plenty of reasons to stay connected with events around the world!
