February is Black History Month in the United States. The idea behind this month, which began in 1911 when slavery was abolished, was to highlight accomplishments by African Americans. Why February? The first national celebration occurred in February of 1926 because it coincides with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. President Gerald Ford officially kicked off Black History Month in 1976, and while many of us have heard of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Barack Obama, we are taking time to highlight several pathbreakers parents or kids might not know!
